Integrative Medicine has grown out of what we would have been typically referred to as Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM). Over the past 30 years healthcare policymakers have tried to organize CAM procedures into two categories. The first category are those services which are considered to "complement" conventional medical care, and the second category are those services which are considered "alternatives" to conventional medical care. It was discovered over time that various CAM therapies do have value based on true science, and they can be applied in patient care based on an evidence based medical model. In light of these facts the solution was to integrate these services into mainstream healthcare. Utilization of CAM services is has also grown over the last 30 years. According to the White House Commission on Complementary & Alternative Medicine it is estimated that 6.5% to as much as 43% of the US population have used some form of CAM therapy.

Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AOM) is a traditional ancient medicine which is not really an alternative to anything. In fact, many Asian countries have integrated AOM into the hospital setting decades ago. The many benefits of AOM were accepted because AOM is effective in treating patients for many types of health conditions, and thus was easily blended with other forms of healthcare in order to benefit the sick and suffering population. The result of integration into the hospital setting allows for AOM and integrative health services to be provided at a higher level with superior service to patients who require both western and eastern forms of medicine, while maintaining a caring environment.
