MLS Laser FAQ

What is High Power MLS Laser Therapy?

MLS Laser Therapy is a medical procedure that uses highly focused laser light energy to treat pain and inflammation. It works at the cellular level by stimulating the body’s natural healing processes. It works equally as well, whether the injury is recent or it has been a long term problem. MLS stands for Multiwave Locked System. This patented technology uses two synchronized wavelengths. The benefits of the combining these two wavelengths can be found here.

Is it safe?

Since its FDA clearance, millions of patient treatments have been performed and there has never been a reported side effect. Laser therapy can be found in every medical discipline including prestigious medical schools. It is frequently used to treat professional athletes in the NFL, NBA and MLB.

Is the treatment painful?

No, actually it is quite comfortable and soothing. Many patients feel pain relief within a few minutes of the treatment session.

Why should I choose MLS Laser Therapy over other devices?

The MLS system uses a patented dual wave treatment that effectively treats both pain and inflammation simultaneously. The treatment is administered using a robotic laser array that ensures the right amount of energy is equally applied to the treatment area.

Can anyone perform laser therapy?

MLS Laser is a “by prescription” therapy, and should only be performed by licensed healthcare professionals and their medical staff. All class 4 laser devices fall into this same category. Be wary of clinics in our community who advertise or promote therapeutic laser therapy when the facility is owned and/or operated by individuals who are unlicensed. Please ask to see their professional license prior to having treatment. According the Florida Department of Health, “The use of lasers falls under the supervision of the healthcare practitioner licensing boards. Unlicensed use of lasers constitutes both the unlicensed practice of a health care profession and is a crime.” For more information please click here. Who is the doctor?

Dr. Scott Denny is trained both as a chiropractic and acupuncture physician. He is a Nationally Board Certified Florida Acupuncture Physician. He has been treating individuals who suffer from a wide variety of acute and chronic pain conditions since 1985. Dr. Denny has worked with many of the top doctors and therapists in pain management in order to find new and innovative methods to help patients reduce or eliminate pain. He has served as the President of the American Academy of Pain Management (AAPM), and is a Diplomate of the AAPM. He is a founding member and Director of the Laser Pain Management Association. He has received certifications in laser therapy, and additional training in Advanced MLS Laser Therapy. For Dr. Denny’s complete bio please click here.

How many therapeutic laser sessions does it typically take?

It depends on the nature of the ailment. Injuries such as tennis or golfer’s elbow can be resolved in as few as six treatments. Chronic conditions require a minimum of 12 to 24 sessions to achieve a therapeutic benefit. In some difficult cases more treatment may be needed.

How much does it cost?

The cost will vary depending on how many treatments you will need, how long each treatment will be, and depending on the number of areas being treated. There is a fee for the examination needed before Laser Therapy begins. An initial consultation is free.

Why doesn’t my insurance cover this?

MLS Laser Therapy Laser Therapy is a relatively new technology and it does not have a distinct CPT code (Insurance Code). As a result, it is not yet recognized by most insurance payers, including Medicare. However, some auto insurance carriers will pay for this service and some Workers' Compensation carriers will pay for this service with prior authorization.

Why doesn’t my doctor know about it?

Since MLS Laser is such a new and upcoming treatment approach, many physicians who do not deal with neuromusculoskeletal pain on a daily basis have not yet heard about this treatment modality. Unfortunately for patients in today’s insurance based medical world, doctors only offer patients treatment for those procedures they can get reimbursed by the insurance companies. Please have your doctor visit our Physician Page to hear what medical providers have to say about MLS Laser Therapy.

Will I need to continue treatments indefinitely?

No, our goal is to try to identify the source of your problem and correct it--especially if it is a biomechanical issue. We use MLS to accelerate the healing process and heal the condition. MLS brings about pain relief by healing the inflamed and injured tissue. Results have proven to be long term, if not permanent, for the majority of conditions we treat. On occasion, there are conditions that require periodic maintenance treatments. Since the MLS has no side effects, the laser can be administered throughout a patient’s lifetime.

Is MLS Therapy approved by the FDA?

Yes, the FDA has cleared the use of MLS therapy and it is also patented with the US Patent Office.

What is the advantage of MLS Therapy over traditional low level lasers (LLLT)?

MLS Therapy is able to induce strong anti-inflammatory, anti-edema, and analgesic effects simultaneously and within a short period of time. LLLT cannot achieve these results because of the limitations of using one or two wavelengths that are not synchronized. The patented control system that generates the MLS pulse synchronizes the emissions to achieve results previously unattainable. Thanks to this characteristic synchronization, the various therapeutic effects not only take place at the same time but reciprocally reinforce each other.

What does MLS stand for?

MLS is an abbreviation for Multiwave Locked System. MLS is the name of the technology used that utilizes a patented combination of infrared wavelengths. The two wavelengths work together, much like a symphony, to deliver superior results.

Can MLS Therapy be used if I had prior surgery or implanted metal?

Yes, MLS Therapy can oftentimes help even if surgery has failed. In addition, unlike other therapeutic lasers in this class, MLS Therapy can be applied to areas where surgical hardware has been implanted without any risk.

Where can I get scientific information on Laser Therapy?

Specific scientific information on MLS Laser Therapy can be found on Cutting Edge Lasers website, and also by visiting ASA Laser. ASA Laser of Italy has researched therapeutic lasers for three decades and verified through in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies, the benefits of MLS Laser Therapy. MLS Laser Therapy has over twice the research and supporting clinical trials of any Class IV device. Research has been conducted by the departments of Biology at the University of Turin (Italy) and the University of Padova (Brazil), as well as the Department of Anatomy and the Orthopedic Clinic at the University of Padova. Research has verified the remarkable effectiveness of MLS Laser Therapy. Please click here for ASA Laser research abstracts. A newer report from 2015 was released by ASA Laser on MLS Laser Therapy, which can be viewed by clicking here. Patient satisfaction research performed by Ronald Lederman, M.D., Orthopedic Surgeon can be found here. General laser therapy research by condition can be found here. A summary sheet of the benefits of MLS Laser Therapy can be found here. What is OrthoLazer?

OrthoLazer is new MLS franchise exclusive to orthopedic surgeons. They use a slight variation on the M6 Robot which increases the super pulse of the laser and rebranded the device the M8. However, in the broader picture slight power variations are meaningless since it is the experience of the laser operator to know how to properly apply the correct dose to the patient. Experienced doctors who use the MLS Laser know the importance of proper patient dosing and small changes in programming of the robot will not change the treatment outcomes. So if you wish to visit an "MLS in a box" office be aware that there is no substitute for over a decade of MLS Robot clinical experience.
