A new research study was published on the use of acupuncture for menopause-related sleep problems. According to this paper, acupuncture is a suggested therapy to help menopausal women improve their sleep.
In the new meta-analysis of more than 30 trials which involved thousands of participants, and published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the researchers found a substantial association between acupuncture and improved sleep in peri-menopausal and postmenopausal women. One of the fascinating aspects of the study was that using specific acupoints, the researchers found elevations of estradiol which is an estrogen most commonly produced by the ovaries.
One particular acupuncture point was called out in the research, a point referred to as spleen 6 which is located just above the ankle on the inside of the leg. This particular point seems to be associated with increases in the estradiol hormone. Spleen 6 is also referred to as the meeting point of the three yin meridians of the leg. Those meridians are the liver, spleen, and kidney. Spleen 6 is a very powerful acupuncture point used in many treatment protocols.
