Researchers: Spinal Manipulation for Low Back Pain Comparable to NSAIDs: Pain Medicine News
This is a great paper published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. After performing a retrospective review of the scientific literature researchers at the Veterans Administration West Los Angeles Medical Center found that spinal manipulative therapy was as effective as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines for low back pain lasting 6 weeks or less. What the paper doesn’t address is the complications that can occur from the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications which are commonly used by many to manage chronic pain. Severe side effects such as GI bleeding lands thousands of patients in the local emergency departments every year. So one needs to ask, why use non-steroidal medicines for acute low back pain at all? Shouldn’t doctors be referring patients for spinal manipulation instead of giving patients pills? Something to think about.
