The increasing use of opioid medications has inadvertently caused a public health epidemic. Well meaning medical physicians need to be re-evaluate their prescribing habits to help curb the growing problem of addiction.
I have been working in pain management for over 31 years now, including serving as President of the American Academy of Pain Management. Patients need to be encouraged to look at integrative pain management options more closely. Doctors should be recommending non-addictive pain management wherever possible. These include: acupuncture, manual treatments, laser therapy, lifestyle change, yoga, stretching, and emotional freedom technique, to name a few.
These types of services should also be considered when helping patients to reduce or eliminate opioid medications, not just when their pain condition begins. These services can also be combined with other treatment techniques such as epidural injections and blocks.
