Tai Chi More Beneficial than Aerobic Exercise for Fibromyalgia Treatment, Trial Suggests: BMJ

According to Fibromyalgia News, fibromyalgia patients who regularly practice tai chi show greater symptom improvement than those engaged in an aerobic exercise program, results from a clinical trial suggest. The study, “Effect of tai chi versus aerobic exercise for fibromyalgia: comparative effectiveness randomized controlled trial,” was published in the journal BMJ.

Patients with fibromyalgia experience chronic musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep abnormalities, and physical and psychological impairments. There is currently no cure for fibromyalgia, and treatment generally involves a combination of medication, exercise, and cognitive behavioral therapy. The ancient art of tai chi shows once again how East Asian medicine has many things to offer patients who suffer from fibromyalgia and pain in general. Unlike other forms of aerobic exercise the slow rhythmic nature of tai chi can help pain patients and avoid abrupt movements which may aggravate pain. So if you pain please consider tai chi, acupuncture and other natural treatments to reduce pain and enhance flexibility.
